The Covenant Meal
'Breaking of Bread', 'Communion', 'The Lord's Supper' - they all mean the same thing. A time where we come aside and by doing something symbolic we celebrate something fantastic.
We actually eat just a bit of bread and drink just a sip of wine - these are the symbols - symbols of Jesus body (the bread) and blood (the wine) which he gave up when he died for us.
His body was broken and his blood flowed - these things symbolise death and suffering - but they also point to what happened as a result of Jesus death. Because he died we can know everlasting life, because he suffered we can know freedom and a relationship with God.
He died, was buried and after three days he came back to life again - not some unusual circumstance following a medical mishap, but after three days dead and buried - he came back to life - we call it resurrection! His resurrection showed that death was not able to keep him - he could not stay dead! Why? Well he had died in our place and now because he was God's son death could not keep him.
He had done what was demanded as the price of our sin and now having paid the price he came back to collect the 'goods' - the 'goods' are our lives, he has purchased our lives for ever - we belong to him and no-one can ever take us away from him.
So we are celebrating the fact that by his death we have life forever!
Luke 22:19
'He took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them saying, "This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me." In the same way, after supper he took the cup saying, "This cup is the new covenant in my blood which is poured out for you."'
